Photography and Social Distancing | What Sessions Will Look Like
What To Expect From Your Photography Session
The world we find ourselves living in now is not nearly the same one we left 8 weeks ago. So much has changed, and as we look toward the future of what our new normal is going to be, I’ve had to do a lot of thinking about how sessions would need to work differently as well. The need and desire to have memories of our families during this time still holds strong, and the good news is that SESSIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR BOOKING! Yay!!
What will my session be like?
Your session will look and feel very similar to what it was like before (if we’ve had a session together in the past). Fortunately, outdoor sessions have always been (for the most part) socially distant anyway, so in that regard, not much has to change in order for me to be in compliance with the new guidelines.
We will focus on play and connection and letting go of the idea of perfection. I will ask you to be present with your family and I will capture you in all of your crazy, wonderful glory. You will still receive the same amount of images and variety in your gallery. I’ll be utilizing two different lenses during our session to provide the wide environmental shots I love so much (using my 35mm) as well as the connection driven images you’re familiar with (using my 85mm) all while maintaining social distancing.
Here are just a few things that will be added in:
1) I will be wearing a mask while I’m shooting.
2) I will maintain a distance of (at least) 6 feet at all time (but likely much father just due to how I normally shoot)
3) There won’t be hugs or high five’s at the start or end of our session
4) I will be asking my clients to bring their own quilts/blankets to the sessions with them.
5) I will be disinfecting my equipment before and after our session.
6) My family will continue to practice social distancing.
Where can we hold our session?
In Massachusetts, it is currently legally required for everyone (over the age of 2), to wear a mask when outdoors when social distancing is not possible. My preference has always been to hold sessions in places where there aren’t other people around and fortunately, those locations are still readily available.
What that means is that I will be offering a selection of locations that I know will allow for us to be able to hold our session without interruption and you will get to choose from those particular spots.
Because so many people are working from home and enjoying the ability to get outside more frequently, parks and other high traffic areas will be busy during the day. My preference has always been to hold sessions at sunrise/sunset and that will be the process moving forward to also ensure a low number (if any) of other people around during our session.
What about in-home sessions?
You know how much I LOVE in-home sessions. For right now, to ensure everyone’s safety (my own, my family’s and yours), I will not be holding traditional in-home sessions for the next few months. BUT, that does not mean that we can’t do a session at your home.
This beautiful family welcomed their new daughter three weeks ago and wanted to have a newborn session. I offered to do this “through the window” session to allow me to get those close-up, detail shots safely. Once we moved outside, I put on my mask and captured their family on their front steps from a socially safe distance. These sessions could work for family, maternity, couple or newborns!
A different approach to newborn sessions…
When it comes to newborn sessions, while a “through the window” session is a different and unique way to photograph your newest addition, the other option is to hold it entirely outdoors. If you bring blankets and a few pillows with you, we can recreate most, if not all of the in-home poses I tend to incorporate. We have beautiful weather ahead of us for the next 4-5 months and can utilize beautiful outdoor areas to capture your newest little addition. I’ve done several outdoor newborn sessions and have been absolutely in love with the result.

I am so happy to be able to get back to work and to be able to capture your families and all the moments and memories that are happening in your lives right now.
I also understand and respect that some of you might not feel comfortable with participating in a session right now, but want to make sure they can get on my schedule. Gift cards are always available and are a great way to get on my schedule without having to nail down a definitive time frame (though sessions are always subject to availability).
I look forward to being able to see you all very soon!
